I’m Not Just Tired: Learning to Speak What I Really Feel

May 12, 20253 min read

After COVID, I found myself in a space I didn’t recognize.

I was overwhelmed, stretched thin, and constantly “communicating” with the people around me. I was talking about my challenges. I was sharing what I needed. But nothing changed. It felt like no one was really listening—or worse, like no one really understood.

That silence became louder than any words I could say.

And I know now, I wasn’t the only one. The women I love, serve, and walk alongside? They were in the same boat—whether they were ready to admit it or not. Most of us had been strong for so long that we forgot how to speak from anywhere but survival.

We said things like:

“I’m tired.”

“I’m good.”

“I’m just overwhelmed.”

But what did those words really mean?

I finally reached a point where I knew I needed help—real help. Not just a vent session or surface-level pep talk. I needed someone smarter than me. Someone who could help me untangle what was really going on underneath it all.

That’s when I was introduced to the Feelings Wheel.

Feelings Wheel

At first, I thought, This is cute. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized how often I was mislabeling my emotions. I wasn’t just tired—I was disappointed. I wasn’t just frustrated—I felt powerless. I wasn’t just “fine”—I was numb.

And those words? They matter.

Because when you can say what you really feel, you give the people around you a chance to show up for you. And if they don’t? That tells you everything. It’s not because you didn’t communicate. It’s because they chose not to care. And now you know how much of your time—and heart—they actually deserve.

This is why I want every woman I know to have access to this tool.

It’s not just about emotional awareness. It’s about liberation. It’s about knowing how to speak your truth clearly and unapologetically.

What is the Feelings Wheel?

It’s a simple tool that helps you break down surface emotions into more specific, accurate ones. The wheel starts with broad categories like mad, sad, afraid, and happy, and then branches into more detailed layers like betrayed, ashamed, insecure, or joyful.

This clarity can help you:

  • Understand what your body and spirit are really trying to say

  • Communicate your needs more effectively

  • Build deeper trust in your relationships

  • Give yourself grace for what you’re actually going through

Here’s How to Use It:

  • At the end of the day, instead of just saying “I’m tired,” check the wheel and ask: What kind of tired am I?

  • Before a conversation with your spouse or loved one, use the wheel to help you choose the right words, not just the easy ones.

  • Journal using words from the wheel—especially when you feel stuck.

Your Challenge This Week:

Download the Feelings Wheel below and spend 5 minutes each night asking yourself one simple question:

“What did I really feel today?”
